5 The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. 6 But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. 7 They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.
This really stood out to me because sometimes we get caught up in the religious discussions/debate for no reason but to prove a point. This is so meaningless! Paul said that the purpose of his instruction is for all believers to be filled with love that comes from a pure heart and a clear conscious and genuine faith! Some people just turn away from these things and continue on meaningless discussions..lacking love. They want to hold a reputation and want people to say "Oh wow...that man is a man of God...he knows what he is talking about"...when really that is the opposite of what God's purpose is for us. Are you letting pride get in the way? We need to start questioning our motives when we discuss the things of the Lord! I thinks it's better for us to shut our mouths than to go down a meaningless path that causes more harm to the unbeliever/believer than good! Lord, help us be humble!
18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,
ReplyDeleteThis verse stood out to be as I read it because recently I have been reminded about the importance of reading the Bible. Last night I was talking to Andy and one thing he said was that by reading the Bible we get to know God better and that we should read the Word ever day and not take the gift of the Gospel for granted. I had never really thought about it in quite that way. I have an opportunity to get to know God better and I so often don't take that chance. This verse talks about Timothy recalling commands given him by Paul and how they will help him fight the battle well. I think this could also apply to my life as well, that by recalling the instruction in the Bible I can fight the battle well or better than I am currently. By reading the Bible we can understand God better which allows us to understand His character and remember that He loves us and is watching out for us etc., which helps us fight the battle well and we can also gain wisdom and instruction from the Bible which will aslo help us fight the battle well.
In short: read the Bible, fight the battle well.
13 "Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief."
ReplyDeleteThis verse is one that I memorized while in high school because it reminded me that without God or apart from God, I am incapable of being good, yet God had mercy on me and forgave me. He is willing to look past all my sins and transgressions, even the ones I have yet to commit, because He loves me! And I, acting out of an immature ignorance, failed to see that fully until late middle school/early high school. I was ignorant, a false Christian. I had claimed to be a Christian and represented Christ in my day to day life very poorly, yet He showed mercy on me. It's a cool thing, mercy.....
20 "Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme."
ReplyDeleteThe first time I read this verse, I found it odd that Paul would include this additional verse onto an otherwise complete chapter. I had to ask myself, how is this scripture useful?
I think that this verse is meant to show us what is at stake in ministry. The verse makes mention of two former believers that "suffered a shipwreck in regard to their faith." It shows that those who oppose the gospel will be handed over to Satan. I know that this is a very simple and common concept, but I know how easy it is to forget in every day life that everyone that we know who does not submit to the gospel is opposed to it, and WILL be handed over to Satan.
19 Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.
ReplyDeleteThis verse spoke to me because I feel like at times we do violate our conscience. We are given a command from th Lord not to do certain earthly things and we choose them over God. It saids their faith will be shipwrecked by this violation. I pray for brothers, myself, and non-believers that we are not shipwrecked by disobeying our conscious.
All is Great in Yahweh
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I thank Jesus enough for considering me faithful, for appointing me to his service. Jesus was picking teams and he chose Paul, and he chose me, and he chose all of us who believe in him. That is an incredible honor. Serving Christ means serving the purpose of creation. I get excited when I am a part of a good sports team, or an incredible pledge class, or a really good college, and I have never thought about being chosen as Christ's ambassador that way before. He saved me, he considered me righteous, and then he chose me, in spite of everything I do wrong. Thank you Jesus for picking me.
6 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
ReplyDeleteThis stresses the importance of reading the Bible and getting into God's word. Often times, people may have the right intentions when it comes to ministry, but, if they do not hide the word of God in their hearts, they will, in some form or fashion, stray away from what God says or commands. Many times, this is not intentional, but it is merely a byproduct of being unfamiliar with what God communicates via the Bible. Ultimately, if we want to do God's will, we have to know what He is telling us. Otherwise, we are going to form beliefs and practices that do not line up with the His will for our lives and His people.
15 "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners -- of whom I am the worst."
ReplyDeleteSomething that I believe that is one of the hardest yet more important teachings of Christ is learning to be humbled. This saying is a perfect example of that. Paul is extremely humble in all that he does. Considering himself the worst of all sinners when we consider him one of the best men in the new testament. In our eyes, we can see many people who we believe are worse sinners that Paul, but in the eyes of God we have all sinned therefore we are all the worst of sinners and are all equal. What I think we should take from this is that we all have sinned, we all continue to sin, so know that Jesus came to save all of us who are the worst of all sinners and that we are no better in the eyes of God than any of our brothers.
1 Timothy 1:16
ReplyDeleteBut I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

It is amazing to see that the Lord has plans that are so much higher than ours. He chose the worst of all villains in order to bring glory to his name. He is always bringing glory unto himself, even from bad situations. It is humbling to know that the purpose of our salvation is not so that we may merely live, but that we may spread God's mercy and bring glory unto him.
15 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all.
ReplyDelete--
I feel this is a universal feeling; we know we are sinners, and perhaps in our own eyes, the worst of all, but still we know Christ came to save us. He forgave and repaired us and allowed us to get up on our feet and walk towards him again. Time after time we fail but he forgives us, for he came to save not condemn us. If anything is certain in this world, is that Jesus loves us and forgives us for our sins so we may join him when the time comes.
5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
ReplyDeletePaul writes many times of love, and every one of his letters is packed with practical advice on how to live wholly for Christ. This really stood out to me because I have a desire to love everyone on this earth - or at least I think I do. Oftentimes I lose sight of it and become angry or harbor grudges against those who do me wrong, and even against some who do me no wrong, and even those I do not know. Here I can see just what it takes to love unconditionally. I pray that the knowledge of it may never leave me, or any of us!
15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
ReplyDeleteWe are all sinners saved by grace through faith. What does it mean that Jesus came into the world to save sinners? It means that in order to truly submit our lives to Christ as Savior and Lord, we must see our need. The self-righteous person does not need a savior for they are their own savior. We must see our sin to correctly see Jesus as our savior.
To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
ReplyDelete(1 Timothy 1:17 ESV)
This comes right after Paul shares his testimony. Right after Paul shares how God has brought Him from death to life. Right after Paul shares of the powerful work of Jesus....he is moved to worship. "Let love be genuine. Let my response to God's saving grace be a true, genuine, heart of worship that I should never forget and always cherrish."
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.
ReplyDeleteThis is it. This is the reason we love Christ. That Christ has unlimited patience. We are 'the worst of sinners' because we know what we are supposed to do, and we still chose not to do it. But Christ in his unlimited patience and love came to this earth as an example of what our lives are supposed to look like, and died for our failures. This pretty much sums it up.
