1 Timothy 5

8 But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers

---Family is so important! God really wants us to honor our family members and to care for them. This includes our parents when they are old...and our children when we have them. This just kind of reminded me of Pastors Kids....How pastors sometimes tend soooo much to the church that they neglect their own families....this says that people who won't care for their relatives are worse than unbelievers! So it's definitely good to have balance in out lives!

25 In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light.

This one is just neat. We don't have to parade around showing everyone the good deeds that we do. Someday God will reveal them and how much greater will that be?!

  1. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

(First Comment!)Good Deeds we do in Christ cannot be hidden. This is really cool to think about. Because we are supposed to lead by example, however in verse 24 it says the same about evil deeds. They to are obvious. Just makes me want to be careful about the things i do and say because i as a Christian i am on display for the world to see what Christians are.

  2. The sins of some men are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.
    (1 Timothy 5:24-25 ESV)

Everything hidden will be brought into the light eventually.

    A prayer from the Psalms:::
"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!"
    (Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)

"Father, I desire to embrace the fact that I am your child and should act likewise. Search my heart to lead me to repentance and walking in holiness. Please Lord, in Jesus name."

  3. 5-6 She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.

We too, if we are truly followers of Christ, will set our hope upon God alone and be persistant in our pursuit of Him through prayer. We all have a choice: will we submit ourselves to the God who gives life or attempt to make ourselves gods our life. Self-indulgence means "Excessive indulgence of one's own appetites and desires." The self-indulgent person is the person who has set themselves up as god of their life and as this verse says, that person is even dead while they live.

If we choose to follow Christ and pursue wholeheartedly His desires, then we will truly live.

The self-indulgent person is dead even while they live, however, the person submitted to Christ lives even in their death.

  4. 24–25 The sins of some people are blatant and march them right into court. The sins of others don’t show up until much later. The same with good deeds. Some you see right off, but none are hidden forever.(Message)

This is extremely important for all to think about with humility. No one living is sinless. It just happens that some people have more evident sins that people call out and the correct or are punished. Others have internal sins that allow them not to be punished in the present day but these sins to not stay hidden forever. If exposed during life the Lord will surely judge upon them after death. Well I do not know what the Lord will judge but from the text we know there will be a judgment.

  5. 25 "In the same way, good deeds are obvious, even those that are not cannot be hidden."

We know that God sees and knows all. But what is cool about this verse is that good deeds, even if you don't make them apparent, will be revealed. So this is what I encourage: do good deeds for one another, but not for your own benefit. Do not boast about your good deeds, but keep silent and do not speak of your good deeds because in time your brothers will realize what good you have done by the power of the Lord.

  6. 1 Timothy 5:16

If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows.
    ___

    Two principles:

    1) We should always support those close to us. We are the worst kind of sinners to let our families be in need when we can help them.

    2) The church is responsible for those who have no family. We must welcome those who are alone as if they are our own family, because they have no family to welcome them.

  7. 20 "Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning."

This is a very interesting command. I don't know that I have seen this very much in my experience and it is extremely hard to confront people about sin in their lives in person let alone in front of people. I believe that the most important point to get from this is that we can't hide sin in the body of Christ and we shouldn't allow continual sin to tarnish the work of Christ in that body at all costs. This can apply to ourselves and to others. We have to address sin problems in our lives and in the lives of others so that we can be pure as a Church body. Our actions, whether in admitting our own sins or working with another's sins even to the point of publicly revealing the sin, should motivate the body to address sin and glorify Christ in ALL things, becoming more like Christ and being transformed in all parts of our lives

  8. 24-25 "The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever."

These two verses were particularly interesting to me because in them, Paul discusses two faces of the same coin. Here, Paul hearkens back to some of his earlier writings where he talks about God's judgement of us after life. For both the good deeds and the bad, Paul believes that in the light of eternity, nothing shall remain hidden. This is of particular importance for us as it should encourage us to always act in a godly and Christ-like manner regardless of who's present because if you act appropriately around others but sinfully in private, God still knows and God will still hold you accountable even though no one else knows to hold you accountable. I also thought the idea that some sins/good deeds go before us to be seen by God while others "trail behind." I am unsure of the full meaning of this, so if any of you have input it would be greatly appreciated.

  9. 24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them.

In recent conversations with one of my friends we have been talking about public and private sins. Some people have very public sins and it is easy to judge them and condem them. However, most people's sins are more private and aren't really visible to others without close inspection. I especially struggle with judging people based on their outward sins when my own private sins remove me from God just as much as their sins.
