1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.
--------------------
Prayer Prayer Prayer! This chapter really brings out the importance of prayer. Just last week I realized that I have a passion to pray over people..I can't help but want to pray over people who come forward during alter call in their suffering, searching for God. I, however, do struggle with constantly praying for people. We are called to be intercessor on EVERYONES' behalf. We should be praying for the lost as well as those who belong to Christ. Challenge yourselves! Next time you tell someone you will pray for them...make sure you mean what you say...If you mean.."I'll think about you for about 10 seconds later on today"....then say that instead! I'm guilty of this...I'm sure I'm not the only one! Can I get an Amen?
3-4 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
ReplyDeleteWe need to be making disciples of all nations. Each and every person on this earth has been created in the image of God, just as we are, and those people are in desperate need of a savior. We should orient our lives around the desires of God and it is very clear that we should have a heart for the nations.
5-6 " For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men -- the testimony given in is proper time.
ReplyDeleteJesus is the only way. He is the direct link between man and the Father. He lived and suffered as man does to show us how to live on earth and to live free from sin. His sacrifice shows how much he loves us. He did not do it for just his disciples, but for all men which makes God so awesome and merciful to save all of us from sin.
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;
ReplyDelete(1 Timothy 2:8 ESV)
So apparently, it's good to pray, continuously and now everywhere. I've seen prayer in so many circles so many conversations and so many quarrels cause grown men to be unified with holy hands raised without anger or quarreling.
Pray together...please, Paul says. If you have a quarrel, pray together.

2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
ReplyDeleteIt pleases God for us to live a peaceful quiet life, filled with Godly things. I want to please God. And here Paul is outlining some of the things that please God.
8 In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.
ReplyDeletePlaces of worship are what we now call churches. In a church there should be unity among believers, and among the body of Christ there should be unity as we are all children of God. We should strive to avoid controversy and those things that could hinder our unity.
12 I do not let women teach men or have authority over them.* Let them listen quietly.
ReplyDeleteThis might not be my favorite verse from this chapter. But it raises a lot of questions that we have in our society of equality. Should we follow this doctrine penned by the mouth of God or should we conform to the changes in society and allow women to become preachers in the church. I think that 1 Tim has a lot of wisdom about important aspects of what it means to be a man and a woman respectively.
All is Great in Lord
8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.
ReplyDeleteThis verse spoke to me most for two reasons. First, it highlights the importance of prayer. Paul wants all men to set aside their differences and pray humbly "for all people". Second, it encourages us to set aside the silly arguments that happen between believers and even entire churches and focus on what really matters; furthering the kingdom of God.
1 Timothy 2
ReplyDeleteThis is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Isn't it great that our God yearns for the salvation of all mankind? It is our sinful nature that stands between us and a great God. Let us not hesitate to bring God's word to everyone we know. With each day that passes by, we are practicing for a life spent not sharing the gospel of our salvation.
"11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."
ReplyDeleteI think there are a few verses in the Bible that can be taken somewhat out of context extremely easily in regards to women. 1 Peter 3:1-7 talks about this subject.
"1Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. 7Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered."
In this passage, Peter says that WIVES should be submissive to HUSBANDS, not that women should be submissive to men. He says that God will be shown to the husbands through the wives' submissiveness. In a way, though, I think women actually lucked out. Verse 7 says that wives are supposed to honor women; it is not honoring to simply boss someone around for no reason. Additionally, it does not say that women cannot have an opinion and help husbands in making decisions. Husbands should just have the final say, and, if they are not going against God, women should support their decision.
Christ called the Church his bride. If we are supposed to strive to be like Christ, does that not mean that we should love our brides in the way that Christ loved the church through sacrifice and service? While women should submit to their husbands, the husbands should be taking care of women and making decisions that best benefit them.
So how does all of that relate back to 1 Timothy 2:11-12? It says that women must learn in quietness and submission. For women to learn, someone has to teach them. This brings the responsibility back to the men and says that we should be taking an active role in the spiritual growth and maturity of our female counterparts. Verse 12 talks about women being quiet, which, when you refer back to 1 Peter, means that women should be quiet and not rebel against their husbands so that they may see the glory of God.
8 "Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing."
ReplyDeleteIn this simple verse, Paul calls us to do several things. First, he calls us to set aside our anger and disputes to unite as one people that worship God. This might seem like a trivial thing, but think about all the "disputes" that exist between different denominations within the Christian faith? Everyday, priests and pastors argue about semantics. Don't get me wrong, semantics are important, but there are some many little liturgical issues that divide our community. We should be focused solely on God/Christ and worshiping Him. Secondly, Paul calls us to pray, to commune with God, lifting up our thankfulness and praise, and communicating with Him. That is something that we don't do enough my friends.....
That last ones from me....I keep forgetting to initial.

8 I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing.
ReplyDeleteI know everyone chose to post about this verse, but it really struck me with its simplicity. Prayer is our way of talking with God, of pursuing a relationship with him. We don't just do it when we need something or when something is wrong, or at least we shouldn't. I know that I am often convicted by that statement, but I want to get to the point where I am talking to God freely each and every day, thanking him for the things he has done for me and just seeking his will for me. And I want to pray actively for others, for their needs and that God's will for them would be done.
