Hebrews 1

Welcome to a new challenge broskies! Hebrews will be epic!

Hebrews 1:4, 8 NLT

This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. But to the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice.

These verses blew my mind!!! God is talking about/to God! Himself! Trinity. Father, son, holy spirit! There is such an amazing relationship here...one that is impossible to understand! There is only one God...so to think that Jesus is anything but God would be a sacrilege. This shows us that Jesus is God! His name is above all others! This was awesome!

  1. 3 - 4: And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

I like this passage for two reasons:

    1) It paints a great picture of who exactly Jesus is. It really highlights the fact that He is the Son of God, and right after He died for sins He returned to Heaven and is currently on the throne. I know that this is kind of elementary to our faith, but as I've said before I love finding all of these things I know in Scripture, seeing where they come from.

    2) It begins a theme in Hebrews: Questioning how supreme Christ is in our lives. Although I doubt that most Christians view angels as superior to Christ, this was more for the Hebrews to whom the book was written, the spirit behind the verse remains. Do we view Christ as being superior to ... ?

  2. 11-12 ...They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.

Hebrews is an amazing book. It firmly establishes the identity of Christ as God and savior. These two verses above are spoken of the Son of God, Jesus. He is the same and his years will have no end. This displays the eternal nature of Jesus Christ. Earlier in the chapter it says that it was through Jesus that God created the heavens and the earth. Only God has existed since the beginning. What a powerful chapter to start Hebrews.

This challenges us to question, "Do we have the correct view of Jesus Christ?" Is our view of Christ sufficient based on this chapter?

  3. 4 "So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs."

I really like this verse mainly because it goes more in depth later in the book. It talks about how Jesus is greater than Moses and Melchizedek the high priest and how he is also greater than the angels. This just puts into perspective how awesome our Lord is. That he is greater than anything anyone has ever known up to this point in time and honestly in all of time. But for Paul to say to the Hebrews that anyone is greater than the angels is something very bold, but he nails it right on the head when talking about Jesus.

  4. 10: And, "You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands;"

Andy alluded to this, but God himself is saying this to Jesus. God calls Jesus "Lord". God attributes creation to the work of Jesus' hands.

I find comfort in this - that Jesus, beginning all the way back in creation, was working in perfect harmony and unity with the Father and the Son. They work together to bring about their designs in the world - creation, redemption, and ultimately God's being glorified.

The hands to which the work of creation was attributed are the hands that healed the sick, touched the untouchable lepers, and were pierced for our transgressions. Being God, he knew all that he would bear, even as his hands laid the earth's foundations.

I look forward to this blog. Thank you for the email about it. I look forward to the rest of Hebrews as we direct our gaze to Jesus, and I am reminded of Piper's definition of faith: "The essence of faith is being satisfied with all God is for us in Jesus."

  5. 14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.

This is amazing to read. If we ask for a relationship with the Lord through the metiator Jesus we are then cared for by angels. Its crazy to think about the supernatural because our society makes think that it can't logically exist. The lord has been showing me that it does exist and is very much at work in our lives. We are in a fight against the devil and we not only have the Holy Spirit but also angels to assist us. This is great news.

    All is Great in God

  6. 11 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
    12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
    But you remain the same,
and your years will never end. NIV

Everything we put value in that is of this world will fade away. Anything we trust in that is of God will remain forever, and we will forever be able to enjoy it because we will be with God in heaven. Why then do i keep chasing tings of this world?

  7. God speaking to Jesus “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”
-cited from Psalm 2:7...which was God speaking of His covenant with David. The Son of God has now come through David's bloodline.

So I was looking at the context of Psalm 2 and it was kind of cool. David mentions that God had made a covenant with him in response to the nations plotting against God---Pressure from the world---

Jesus ushers in the new covenant through Himself as He is the promised Messiah. And in believing in Him, we shall be called sons of God and adopted into God's family as His children. "What shall we say to these things, if God is for us who can be against us?"

  8. 3-4 "The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs."

This verse paints such a beautiful picture of the power and majesty of Jesus. It shows His power by demonstrating He is above angels. It demonstrates His purpose on Earth and how His fulfillment of that purpose impacts us. And it demonstrates the concept of the Trinity, The Three-in-One ideology, though we only see God and Jesus represented here. When I read this verse, I pictured two things. The first was God creating Earth and how that was made possible by His "powerful word". The second thing was Jesus sitting at the right hand of God. This last one is such a powerful image. It makes me want to be able to stand in God's court in awe of the brilliance of those who sit on the thrones. And because of that, it makes me want to strive to be more like the one who sits at God's right hand, who gave His life for us men filled with blackness and sin and death. I mean, the idea of Jesus being more powerful than angels evokes such intense feelings of inferiority on my part. I am drawn to mortal representations of angels in classical artwork, shown with power and brilliance, and I can only imagine what Jesus, who is MORE powerful and MORE brilliant than all angels, really looks like......I know this seems trivial but take a moment and think about what Jesus and God will look like on the thrones, in full splendor.....Don't you want to be able to go beyond just trying to imagine it and just see it with your own two eyes? Yeah, thought so....

  9. Hebrews 1:3

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.
    _______

Jesus is the very face of God. If we ever wanted to see the true heart of God, to see how he would live and move and talk, we just need to look at Jesus. Being the heir of all things, he did not demand his rights. He did not exalt himself. He lived a very hard life.

A lot of time, we associate wealth and success with blessings from God, but the man who owned the world itself, chose to be homeless. He chose to wander. The king of all mankind chose to let his subjects spit on him.

Do you ever feel disrespected? Do you ever feel like others are not giving you the respect you deserve? Swallow your pride. Jesus was the king, and instead of cursing those who disrespected him, he cried for them.

If Jesus is so quick to love, and so slow to pour out wrath, and he is the facsimile of God's being, how much do you think that God loves you and wants to see you saved?
