Hebrews 2

1 So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
----------------------
I went with the first verse because it really is the simple truth of why we need to get into the word daily...we need to learn more and more about the gospel and the things that help us follow Christ to the up-most of our ability. If we don't get into the word we will drift away. We are like lambs who lose their way by feeding on the grass of this life--located off of the path that the Lord has paved out for us!

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Rom 10:17

  1. 14 Since therefore the children share in the flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.

Chapter 2 of Hebrews seems to highlight much of the humanity of Christ. Chapter 1 focused on his divinity, but this chapter and particular this verse display the importance of his humanity.

The verse above perfectly states it. Because we, humanity, are flesh and blood he who is God had to also take on that flesh so that he might properly atone for the sins of the world. So many people minimize the importance of his humanity in light of his divinity, but we must not do that because both are of utmost importance to the Gospel and both must be present in order for our sins to be forgiven at the cross.

  2. 18 "Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted"

One of the main things I believe that sets Jesus and Christianity apart from all other religions is that Jesus became man and suffered just as man does. He was tempted just as we are everyday and he overcame all of it. He has shown us that it is possible to live without sin. He is our example to follow. He is the one who we go to for guidance when we are lost, when we are tempted, and when we are in need the most.

  3. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.

Being a part of God's family is something to be cherished. This is by far one of my favorite chapters in scripture. It iterates that we are cared for in what Christ has fulfilled for us, a new and everlasting coventant, an eternal high priest as the entire book is about, that he is the everlasting intercessor.

Comparing the passage with how we are adopted sons of God.
Galatians 4:4-7 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit calls out, "Abba Father" So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you an heir.

It offers us Christ as our spiritual big brother standing up for us. We should seek to be valued in a family as we are on earth and by our brothers. How even greater is it that we can receive the same gifts and covenant as Abraham, and dwell with our big brother Jesus forever because he literally stood up on our behalf in taking down the only enemy that could ever defeat us, death. God intercedes for his family, and we are blessed to have literally the best big brother ever because he died for us. He made us holy, to be a part of his family, to dwell in the Father's House with our brothers and sisters, and always have a big brother to keep the bullys, "death", away.

  4. 1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. (NIV)

This is such truth. I feel many times the reason that we will tend to drift is because ,like tito said, we do not delve into the word as much as we need too. I can say from personal experience that i was afraid i would get overall burnt out on broskies in the word however i feel that just the opposite has occurred. Through reading the bible daily i have been able to become more excited and i look forward to my daily reading. Even if it is at 3 in the morning. I feel like my day can no longer be complete unless i have read my bible. We need to continue learning about what we have heard so that we will not drift away.

  5. 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise hpartook of the same things, that ithrough death he might jdestroy kthe one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who lthrough fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Boom. God took on flesh of a man to be able to live a life sinless and die as a sacrifice to atone all our sins. This is amazing the Son of God came down from paradise and took on our stinky smelly flesh to then be tortured and crucified on a cross to save the entire world. I know that I am not able to conceive the pain that Jesus felt during those last hours. Thank you lord for the unending grace to be able to sacrifice your son on our behalf. Thank you Lord

  6. Hebrews 2:17

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
    _____

Is it not great that we have a high priest who knows and understands our struggles and temptations? The difference between Him and us is that he understands sin, even better than we do, yet his judgment is not clouded.

Frequently, we are quick to condemn those who struggle with things that we do not. If we see someone who struggles with purity, and we do not, we judge them. If we see someone who struggles with hate, and we do not, we judge them.

Jesus is not so dismissive. He understands our struggles. Yet he never gave in. He never sought the things of this world. Though he was tempted in all ways, he never took his eyes off the Father.

Therefore, he is merciful and just, because he walked as a man, yet sinned not.

  7. 9 "But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."

I really like this verse because I feel that it further magnifies the sacrifice that Jesus made when He came to Earth. He left his throne, his authority, and all the things associated with sitting at the right hand of God to come dwell among us. He felt hunger and pain and all the other bad things than make up a mortal life. And he did all this...... without sinning. Take a minute and think about this. How often do we complain and gripe about our lives, whether because of Tech or some other source? How often do we sin in one day? Jesus experienced all of this (well....except for consistently failing at Tech) with us and did it without complaining and without sinning....if that isn't enough, he then went on to die FOR us, the people who gripe and complain and sin against God everyday. Who is more worthy to sit crowned in glory and honor that Him?
